The Boathouse Restaurant & Shop

Tucked away in the scenic heart of Glencaple, overlooking the serene waters of the River Nith, The Boathouse Restaurant & Shop is more than just a place to eat-it’s a soul-soothing escape where locally-sourced ingredients meet comforting flavors. Located at Quayside, Dumfries DG1 4RE, this charming riverside spot has become a beloved destination for those craving hearty meals, artisan desserts, and a relaxed yet refined countryside vibe.

What truly sets The Boathouse apart is its ability to strike that elusive balance between rustic warmth and contemporary elegance. With wheelchair-accessible entrances, seating, car park, and toilets, it ensures an inclusive experience for everyone. Whether you’re planning a quiet morning coffee, a celebratory brunch, or a casual dinner, the setting invites you to linger-especially when the fireplace is crackling during chillier seasons or the outdoor seating area is bathed in golden sunlight.

If breakfast is your love language, then you’re in for a treat. The Vegan Full Scottish Breakfast is a standout-generous, colourful, and packed with flavor. Prefer something sweet? The Belgian Waffle, topped with seasonal fruit or vegan ice cream, offers a morning indulgence that feels anything but ordinary.

The Boathouse is also widely known for its exceptional brunch dishes. Eggs Benedict and Huevos are cooked to perfection, often paired with their velvety chai latte or a strong cappuccino that rivals any city café. In fact, their coffee selection-which includes hot chocolate, coffee cake, and even espresso-based treats-has garnered praise from visitors near and far, especially those who appreciate quality brews in a scenic, unhurried environment.

Lunch options offer just as much to celebrate. The Fish Finger Sandwiches, Chicken and Bacon Baguette, and Pulled Pork Wrap deliver comfort food with gourmet-level detail, while the Chicken Salad and Vegetarian Afternoon Tea are ideal for lighter bites or plant-based preferences. For those wanting something different, don’t miss the Smoked Salmon and Mackerel with Chorizo, served with homemade baked beans, poached eggs, and freshly baked bread. It's the kind of dish that leaves a mark-both visually and flavorfully.

Here’s where the experience turns from delightful to unforgettable. The Vegan Strawberry Cheesecake, served with ice cream, is a must-try even for non-vegans. The wedding cake-style desserts, freshly baked scones, and rotating house-made sweets make it easy to justify skipping the main just to save room for dessert.

The attention to detail here is remarkable-desserts are served at the right temperature, portion sizes are generous without being overwhelming, and the flavors? Utterly decadent yet never too sweet.

In addition to the restaurant’s standout dishes, The Boathouse also boasts a curated wine list, offering both familiar labels and lesser-known gems. There’s also beer, cider, and a collection of spirits for those looking to wind down after a long walk along the quay. Free water refills and the option for healthy, vegetarian, and vegan dishes reflect a thoughtful, guest-first approach to hospitality.

It’s not just about the food and drink though-it’s about how they’re served. The staff here are warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about what they do. They’re happy to guide you through the menu or suggest the best wine pairing for your French toast or salmon and poached egg.

Even though The Boathouse doesn’t offer delivery, the in-person experience is where it truly shines. The setting is tranquil yet alive with nature, making it an ideal retreat for solo diners, couples, or families. Whether you’re passing through Dumfries or planning a weekend getaway, this riverside gem is one of those rare places that manages to feel both homely and special.

Come for the view, stay for the food-and maybe take home a little something from the shop attached to the restaurant. It’s all part of the charm.

We had an excellent, if unexpected, lunch at The Boathouse. We ordered the fish platter, which was shown as either to share as a starter or for one main meal. To say there was sufficient for two as a main meal lunch is closer to truth. There were cod goujons, prawns, squid rings, smoked salmon, pate, and all the trimmings.

What a brilliant little place! Great food, lovely craft stuff and a good range in the deli section. The Boathouse Benny is up there as one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten

We have eaten at the boathouse a number of times and keep coming back when we are in the area. This time we had lunch on a Saturday and had booked well in advance. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. The boathouse is situated on the river Nith and has windows looking out at the great view. When we are here we also like to visit Vintage on the Nith, mid century antique shop, which is just over the road

We had a lovely breakfast here on a Saturday morning. The food was excellent, all four in the group enjoyed our food and coffees. The view is great and the staff could not have been nicer. Couldn't recommend it more!
